Dear Parents,
This week was overall a pretty great week, considering we were stuck indoors on some days that were too cold or rainy. Angelique read some new books from the library and the kids followed Carrie in movement activities during what would normally be our outdoor time. Everyone’s favorite book this week was by far Eddie Longpants, by Mireille Levert. Be sure to ask your child to tell you all about it as this book was definitely special to them. During movement activities, the kids especially found fun in running in place as a group, while counting at the same time!
Small Group Lessons This Week
Zipping a Zipper- While we’ve had this lesson before with the zipper frame, it’s a lesson we go back to again and again. This week, we were finally seeing many kids zipping their own zippers on their coats, without any help! Many kids were really proud of themselves for doing so, or at least making an effort.
Grading Shades of Colors Extension- This extension started out with a lesson on a nonagon, and then the kids were shown how to grade the colors around the nonagon, which ended up looking like a sun or a flower. This lesson truly brought new life to the Montessori material as many kids were excited to try it out.
Mammals Matching Cards: These matching cards included images of adult males, females, and baby animals that the children were shown how to to group. They had fun taking turns matching the babies to their “mommys” and “daddys.”
Sorting Beginning Sounds Objects: After a lesson on mixing the objects and sorting them by their beginning sounds to the appropriate letter, students may now take two or three mugs full of beginning sounds objects to sort.
Lessons On Saving the Environment: Throughout the week, caring for the environment seemed to be the theme kids especially responded well to. They were very interested to learn about what can happen when people don’t take care of the environment and what we can do to prevent pollution. One of the books that especially brought out discussion was The Ocean Story, by John Seven. Here is a short video (1 min,38 seconds) that should give you a visual of what the book covered: The Ocean Story. We also read a book on recycling called Recycle That!
Announcements
A New Student Arrived this Week! Meet Bill:
Bill has already caught on very quickly to the flow of the studio, as many of our students willingly showed him around and helped him with material. We are very thankful for all of our little teachers! Welcome, Bill!
Have a great weekend, everyone. Below are some additional photos of the week…
Eddie Longpants sounds like a great book – I’ll have to look for it at the library. Great pics this week – glad to see that you observed the beautiful icicles at the fountain! Sounds like fun and interesting work this week between zippers, mammal families, and the environment! Have a great weekend!
Thanks for the comments, Carrie! I got that book from the main library over on Roxboro. Anyway, glad you enjoy the posts! Always nice to hear. Yeah, you inspired me to go and get a pic of those icicles on our way to the playground. Hope all is well!
