December 13th News Letter

Hello Parents,

What a happy Friday it has been for the kids!  They were all so pleasant, constructive, and very welcoming to a potential student we had visiting with us today.  As for the rest of the week, we will share with you our observations & lessons in subject areas:

Language Activities

Writing Practice: This week, nearly every child practiced tracing letters or numbers.  Even the young ones who are still working on their fine motor skills gave it a go and were very proud of their efforts.  We are seeing a lot of progress in this area.  Older students practiced copying sentences or placing the wooden alphabet letters properly on a line.

Reading: We added a new shelf with cards of 3 letter words along with pictures to match.  Many older children did really well with this work and we are happy to see how well they did with sounding out their words to find the images.

Sequencing Cards: We had a lesson on sequencing cards of images that have very subtle changes in each picture, requiring close attention.  Children took turns sequencing during small groups.

Singing Letter Sounds: We sang warm ups on the piano this week with Angelique, singing scales of various letter sounds.  They always have fun with these exercises and especially enjoy any letters that make their lips tickle, such as “v.”  Following warm-ups, we sang some holiday songs for fun.

Story Book Box: Miss Carrie read a favorite this week,  “Alexander and the Wind Up Mouse, and added objects for the kids to act the story out.

Math Activities

Material that we especially observed children enjoying this week included the teens board, the bead stair along with a coloring page, the 100 board,  the large number cards, and number rods.

Practical Life Lessons & Activities

This week, the children had lessons on some holiday trays that we put together in practical life, using tweezers and small tongues to transfer with.  Many children also enjoyed a funny lesson on nail cutting as we offered a paper hand with nails to trim.  Many kids found it fun to decorate their hands afterward, by coloring “nail polish” and “jewelry” on them.

Botany & Zoology

Puzzles continue to be everyone’s favorite in these areas, followed by 3 part cards.

Sensorial

A number of activities were going on in this area during work cycle, such as color matching, color grading, binomial & trinomial cubes, and puzzles.   Many kids have been observed building structures by combining the brown stair & pink tower.  These children are very thoughtful about what they are building as they begin to explain the purpose of their structure.  It’s always interesting to see what they come up with.

Culture, Science, & Geography

Electricity: We have been reading kids books on electricity during circle times, along with watching some short video clips of how electricity travels through power plants and power lines.  We even got into atoms, however, we absolutely do not expect them to remember that.  If anything, we hope that our students are simply beginning to have a better understanding of the different energies surrounding them.

People of the World: We continue to talk about different types of families and people all over the world, how they are different and how we relate.  We found many children enjoying the library books on these topics.

Geography: We’ve observed that many of our older kids are able to complete our puzzle maps completely on their own!  Land forms also continue to be a hit.

This week, we celebrated David’s life.  Here’s a photo of him showing his friends photos of himself when he was little.
